A Step in the Right Direction

Microsoft is finally taking a stand on digital rights management. Despite its long-running campaign against piracy, M$ disagrees with the Hollywood approach to DRM, which would require industry-wide technological standards to prevent copyright infringement.

Anti-piracy measures are self-defeating if, in tightening security, they impair technology’s usefulness or burden users. And even the best security is breakable. It must be improved continuously to stay ahead of hackers.

They also encourage the entertainment industry to embrace digital distribution. Good for M$. Hopefully more industry leaders will follow suit.
