Job Prospects: The Great Emptiness of 2003

West Coast Law Firm Closing After Dot-Com Collapse + And another one bites the dust. Brobeck, one of the largest and oldest firms in San Francisco is shutting its doors. I hope that next fall, when I begin looking for a post-graduation job, there are still firms left in the Bay Area. Actually, I hope there are more than a few firms left, given all the Stanford, Boalt, Hastings, and Santa Clara grads in the region.

The article raises the issue of firm consolidation, but doesn't go into very much depth. I think this is going to be huge force affecting the legal field in the next few years. Regional firms with lots of history (and lots of clients) are failing. Those markets still have plenty of clients needing representation, though, so there is a vacancy. From my admittedly limited knowledge of BIGLAW, it appears the vacancies are being filled by expansion rather than creation. I can't imagine what it would take to start a new firm and survive in a major market these days. Pretty soon, we'll all be working for Cravath, Skadden, & Morrison, LLP, which represents all companies in the world in all disputes. <shudder>

Work really hard and it could be Cravath, Skadder, Morrison & Jubu, LLP.

You have no idea how little that appeals. I want to work in such a place for a while to cut my teeth, get the training (and pay off my loans), but considering that I'll be 27 when I graduate law school, that sort of goal would prevent me from having a social life, wife, kids and all that jazz until I'm roughly 83.
