Interviews: The Great Emptiness Uncertainty of 2003 (part IV)

Two interviews scheduled for next week. Both are excellent opportunites but both come with strong downsides as well.

Job One: Judicial Externship.
+ Pros: Judicial anything looks good on the resume. It's in my home state, where I hope to return after law school. It would be a significant amount of research and writing, both of which are essential for litigation practice and both of which I need to improve. Judicial internships are a good step for those who want to clerk after school.

+ Cons: No cash. Living back home with no cash means living back home with mom and dad. Not sure about how exciting that would be. Going home is nice, but working near school would save me an extra cross-country move and make getting ready for fall semester much easier.

Job Two: In-house Legal Internship with Major Tech Company
+ Pros: This is the type of job I dreamt of having... in about 10 years. I like the company a lot and believe in a lot of what they do. The work would be interesting -- a lot of IP, computer privacy, and licensing stuff. It's paid (not big fat law firm paid, but more than enough to pay the rent and enjoy summer paid.) In-house work tends to have a good lifestyle associated with it; this is doubly true here given the culture of the company. It's near school, so I could find an apartment for next year and get settled without having to move everything twice or put my stuff in storage.

+ Cons: It's a two-year commitment, with no reciprocal commitment about a job after graduating. It's all corporate work with no litigation. Combined with the two-year commitment, that means I'd essentially be giving up my interest in litigation, clerking, etc. Even if I went to a big firm after working there for two years, it would be on the corporate/transactional side, not on the litigation side.

Since I haven't even had the interviews yet, let alone received offers, I know I shouldn't be trying to decide between the two or thinking about the cons too much. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it, I guess.
