Buddha World Tour '05: Law School... What's That?

My plans for the next nine months or so are starting to take shape. I'm looking at trips to four countries on three continents. The line-up looks something like this:

January: 10 days in Israel.
February: 7 days in Spain.
March: 7 days in Japan.
August: 1 month in Australia.

The first and last are near certain. The middle two are likely, but not yet definite.

To answer your questions, yes, I'm still in school. No, I'm not doing an independent study. Yes, I will miss some classes. No, I'm not particularly concerned. Yes, I will have to study on an occasional flight. No, I'm not abandoning school wholesale. No, I don't suddenly hate law school. No, it's not going to be cheap. Yes, it will be worth it.

By and large, I enjoyed my summer experience, and I'm looking forward to joining a large firm. It's not for some, but it is for me.

That said, I do have some concerns. I was shocked and a bit saddened by how fervently the attorneys I worked with encouraged me to take a big trip after the bar. These were attorneys who allegedly liked their jobs and found their hours reasonable, particularly as compared to their compensation. When the subject of bar trips came up, without exception, they encouraged me to take the biggest, best trip possible... because I'd never have another chance like that. Even if taking a better bar trip means racking up a little credit card debt and that forces me to wait an additional year before I can make a down payment on a place, I should do it. Every attorney agreed about this. Most said it with a sad look in their eyes.

I have little illusion about what firm life holds for me, so I'm seizing the opportunities while I can.

The 2005 world tour is just part of a larger plan. The next nine months, bar exam not withstanding, are about enjoying myself. That will include lots of travel, interesting classes, good books, and more.

A number of people seem to think it makes little to no sense for me, at this point in my law school career, still to be concerned with writing on to law review. They are all correct. And yet I'm... [Read More]

You should also work in a trip to Ethiopia. I hear the spaghetti there is really, really good.

Ah yes, Ethiopian spaghetti is quite a delight. But I'm afraid that, unlike Ethopian restaraunts in L.A., the restaurants in Ethiopia might not have the dishes on their menus numbered. I might order the spaghetti and actually get a tasty, authentic Ethiopian dish. What a shame that would be!
