Prof Tweaks Registrar's Nose

This morning, I received the following email from my Decedents' Estates (a.k.a. "Dead People's Money") professor:

Hi, all -
Well, I've turned in the grades and so I would normally be ready to send them out to you. But the Registrar's Office has expressly directed that we NOT do that this semester. They will be posting the grades on May 18, so I regret that I can't be of more help. Best wishes for success on your exams!*

The Registrar and Prof. DE have a bit of history together and are not really one another's biggest fans, from what I can tell.

Prof. DE writes an objective exam -- every question has a right answer. He models it on his previous exams. Every year, there are students who obsess over the previous exams and manage to not miss a point on a 200+ question exam. The kindly professor would like to reward everyone who does well with a good grade, but the Registrar forces a curve on him.** Prof DE says he can't even sit down and take his own exam in three hours and do as well as his students. Because of the Registrar, people missing more than 2 questions can't get an A, and more than about 10 mistakes drops you to a B+. Miss 20 and you get a B. Last year, he said 20 people got perfect scores. The Registrar says his exam is too easy; he says it's proof that people are learning the material very well, so they should get good grades. I don't take a position on the issue (though I might on May 18), but I find this little note the professor sent out today very amusing. I wonder how many students have already emailed a complaint to the Registrar.

* Quoted without permission. I know some profs find that to be inappropriate. I don't see a problem, but if it gets back to Prof. DE and he would like it removed, I'll take it down.
** This is odd in itself, as our curve is not mandatory, but suggested, and I've had classes which deviated significantly. One notable class had 75% As and A-s, and it wasn't a seminar or particularly small class. There were about 65 people, if I recall correctly.
